2/20/2022

Text: Matthew 17:1-9, 2 Corinthians 4:6, Revelation 1:16, Philippians 2:8-9, 2 Corinthians 4:7, John 16:14, Exodus 40:34, Matthew 17:3-4, Luke 9:29-30

Matthew 17:1-9 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James ,and John his brother,

and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

And was transfigured before them:

and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord,

it is good for us to be here: if though wilt, let us make here three tabernacle; one for thee,

and one for Moses and one for Elias.

And when the disciples heard it,

they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

And Jesus came and touched them, and said,

Arise, and be not afraid.

And when they had lifted up their eyes,

they saw no man, save Jesus only.

And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying,

Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

  1. Peter, James, and John were set aside and taken "apart" from the other disciples

  2. It was part of the circle of consecration A. The thousands B. The 70 C. The 12 D. The 3 E. The I

  3. Peter chosen by the Holy Spirit preached Pentecost, wrote 2 Epistles, was first to take gospel to the gentiles

  4. John wrote the gospel of John, 3 Epistles and saw the lord in his glory on Patmos penning the book of Revelation which closed the canon of scripture which began with Moses 1600 years earlier

  5. John was the last to die of the apostles

  6. James was murdered by Herod in 44 A.D. just 11 years after the crucifixion; Those 11 years were marked by the touch of God;

  7. He headed up the first church in Jerusalem and council in Acts 15;

  8. The Lord brings these three up to a "High Mountain Apart" possibly Mt. Tabor as some believe. Some have alluded it may have been Olivet where the Lord will return

  9. At the bas of this mountain Jesus delivered a boy from demon spirits; same mountain that Jesus prayed, sought his father, meditated on the scriptures.

  1. This glory the disciples saw was not from without but from within! The miracle was not the transfiguration but the hiding of the glory by Christ! (Human-Divine - 100% of both)

  2. This event was paramount in the ministry of Christ similar to his earthly baptism

  3. Here his glory is revealed to three disciples that denotes the royal presence and God's APPROVAL on his SON!

  4. The kingdom of God was in the MIDST of his people

  5. When Christ is inside you as a believer, the kingdom of God IS WITHIN YOU!

  6. His face shining was similar to what john would see in revelation 1:16 "as the sun," and "in his strength"

  7. This is the glory that shines in our hearts as believers and must shine to those who are lost (Jesus must be lifted up!) (2 Cor. 4:6)

  8. "Rainment" was white as the light, meaning his garment shown as white (Revelation 1:9-19)

  9. "Light" - "Stilbo" means LIVING LIGHT

  10. He was transfigured from A SERVANT to DEITY because HE IS DEITY - The LIGHT CAME FROM WITHIN!

  11. This will be how he shall appear in his coming kingdom glory in the kingdom age!

  12. All the time a servant, all the time God; The glory rested upon him because he was a servant (Phil 2:8-9)

2 Corinthians 4:6

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 1:16

And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

Philippians 2:8-9

And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore god also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

2 Corinthians 4:7

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

John 16:14

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Exodus 40:34

Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Matthew 17:3-4

And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias

Luke 9:29-30

And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

  1. Moses and Elijah "SUDDENLY" appear with Christ

  2. Moses represented those under law; Elijah the prophets

  3. Moses had died roughly 1500 years earlier; Elijah translated (A type of the rapture of the church) 900 years earlier (NO SOUL SLEEP) (Moses had been brought up from paradise (Deut. 34, Jude 9) and he was wearing clothes)

  4. Christ fulfilled the law AND the prophets

  5. Christ is coming BACK for the dead in Christ AND the living (translated saints)

  6. First resurrections will include both!

  7. They were "talking with him" about his "decease" referring to his crucifixion - the law and the prophets POINT TO THE CROSS!

  8. Elijah and Moses talked to the Lord the CROSS! SO SHOULD THE CHURCH!

  9. Everything depended on this; the law pointed TO man's salvation but could NOT bring it about!

  10. The Holy Spirit's descents depended on the CROSS

  11. The coming resurrection of LIFE depended ON THE CROSS!

  12. ALL THINGS DEPEND ON THE CROSS - It's the great theme of Heaven! (Rev 1:5; 5:6; 7:14)

  13. The power of God on this mountain caused the disciples TO fall into a deep sleep awaken to this great event - Dead in Christ shall awake to glory!

  14. Peter asks the Lord to make "BOOTHS" speaking of the feast of tabernacles

  15. Peter's thinking is the church's today - the kingdom of heaven he thought had arrived NOW (Zech. 14:18-21)

  16. The plan of God is still seen through a glass darkly (1 Cor. 13:12)

  17. The disciples looked for an earthly kingdom then and the church is doing same today - CHRIST HAD TO DIE! Without the cross the kingdom would have never came period!

  18. The spirit of Antichrist offers a world kingdom NOW
